Put every state's renewal date and CE window on one calendar with CDR's dates. Georgia licenses expire March 31 of even years, Illinois October 31 of odd years, Kentucky October 31 and Maine December 31 every year, and Texas and Ohio two years from issue. CDR's fee is due August 31.
One dietitian license renews on a schedule you learn once. Three or four licenses do not, because each state picks its own date, its own cycle and its own continuing education window, and the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) runs a separate calendar on top. Most lapses are not caused by missing CE. They are caused by a date nobody wrote down.
What kinds of renewal dates do states use?
Two kinds, and you need to know which each license uses.
- Fixed statewide dates. Every license in the state expires on the same day. These are easy to remember and easy to miss, because the date has nothing to do with when you were licensed.
- Anniversary dates. The license expires a set period after it was issued, so your date is personal. These are hard to remember because no one else shares them.
Which dates apply in each state?
| State | Type | Expiration | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Georgia | Fixed | March 31 of even-numbered years | Georgia Secretary of State |
| Illinois | Fixed | October 31 of odd-numbered years | 68 Ill. Admin. Code 1245.300 |
| Pennsylvania | Fixed | Two-year periods from October 1 to September 30 | 49 Pa. Code 21.723 |
| Kentucky | Fixed | October 31 every year | 201 Ky. Admin. Regs. 33:020 |
| Maine | Fixed | December 31 every year | Board of Licensing of Dietetic Practice |
| Texas | Anniversary | Two years after the date of issuance | Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation |
| Ohio | Anniversary | Two years after the date of issuance | Ohio Rev. Code 4759.06(C) |
Two quirks are worth noting. Kentucky gives a license issued within 90 days of October 31 until the following October 31 for its first renewal (201 Ky. Admin. Regs. 33:020). Pennsylvania's rule set the first period to end September 30, 2006, with two-year periods after that, which puts its renewals on even-numbered years.
Which CDR dates belong on the same calendar?
- Early June: CDR emails the annual registration maintenance fee link.
- August 31: fee due ($80 for RDs, rising to $90 on June 1, 2027; $70 for DTRs).
- September 1 to 30: $50 late fee period.
- October 1: the credential lapses if payment is not received.
- November 30 of the year before your cycle ends: optional Midpoint Review deadline.
- May 31 of your cycle's final year: CE for the five-year cycle must be complete.
- June 30 of that year: portfolio submission deadline. Missing it lapses the credential September 1.
See CDR recertification and state renewal for what each date means.
What does a combined calendar look like?
Take a hypothetical telehealth RD who holds an Ohio license issued in March 2025, a Kentucky license, an Illinois license and a Georgia license, with a CDR cycle ending in 2028. Her next 18 months look like this:
- Early 2027: start the Ohio renewal well before its March 2027 anniversary. Confirm the one hour on ethics or Ohio dietetics law is done.
- June 2027: pay CDR's fee when the link arrives. The RD fee is scheduled to rise to $90 on June 1, 2027.
- September 2027: finish Kentucky's 15 hours for the year ending October 31 and Illinois's 30 hours for the period.
- October 31, 2027: Kentucky and Illinois both expire. Kentucky allows a 60-day grace period with a $25 late fee; Illinois treats practice while a license is not active as unlicensed practice.
- November 30, 2027: last day for CDR's optional Midpoint Review before the 2028 cycle end.
- March 31, 2028: Georgia expires. All CE must already be in CE Broker.
- May 31 and June 30, 2028: CDR portfolio CE complete, then submitted.
Illinois deserves a note. Its Dietitian Nutritionist Practice Act is scheduled for repeal on January 1, 2028, two months after that October 2027 renewal. Watch for legislative action before then; see the Illinois sunset.
How far ahead should reminders go?
Earlier than the board's own notice. Ohio's statute says the board provides a renewal notice at least one month before expiration, but "failure of any person to receive a notice of renewal from the board shall not excuse the person" (Ohio Rev. Code 4759.06(C)). Texas says the same: failing to receive notification "will not excuse failure to apply for renewal." A practical rhythm:
- 90 days out: check CE hours and required topics against the state's window.
- 60 days out: confirm your address and email of record with the board, and fix CDR status if anything is pending.
- 30 days out: renew. Illinois, for one, opens renewal during the month before expiration (68 Ill. Admin. Code 1245.300). Do not wait for the last week.
- After renewing: confirm the new expiration date on the board's lookup and keep the receipt.
Beyond renewals, what else belongs on the calendar?
- Audit windows. Texas audits after renewal, at any time during the license period.
- Record retention. Pennsylvania wants CE documentation kept for five years; CDR wants two years after each cycle.
- Payer revalidations and employer attestations, which often ask for current license dates. Our sister site covers tracking expiring credentials from the payer side, and White Glove Telemedicine has a broader telehealth compliance calendar.
Can we keep the calendar for you?
Yes. Our Annual Renewal & CE Compliance service ($299 per license, per year) builds one calendar for every state license and your CDR credential, tracks CE against each state's window and required topics, sends reminders well ahead of each date, and prepares each renewal for you to review, sign, pay and submit. Board and CDR fees are separate. If something has already lapsed, see reinstating a lapsed license.
Common questions
- When do Georgia dietitian licenses expire?
- All Georgia dietitian licenses share a common expiration date of March 31 of even-numbered years, according to the Georgia Secretary of State.
- When does an Illinois LDN license expire?
- October 31 of each odd-numbered year, with 30 hours of continuing education required to renew. The Act itself is scheduled for repeal on January 1, 2028.
- Do Texas and Ohio dietitian licenses share a renewal date?
- No. Both run two years from the date the license was issued, so each dietitian's date is personal. Write yours down when the license issues.
- Does the board have to remind me to renew?
- Ohio sends a notice at least a month ahead, but both Ohio and Texas say not receiving a notice does not excuse a missed renewal. Keep your own reminders.
