What dietitians miss in Montana
- A 2025 law created the dietitian license. Nutritionists licensed on October 1, 2025 who hold the RD were converted to dietitian licenses, and license numbers changed from MED-NUTR to MED-DIET.
- Montana licenses CNS-credentialed nutritionists alongside dietitians, with the same restriction on medical nutrition therapy.
- Every applicant submits fingerprints for a state and FBI background check.
Does Montana license dietitians?
Montana licenses dietitians and nutritionists through its Board of Medical Examiners. Only a licensee, or someone exempt under 37-25-304, may provide medical nutrition therapy, and the dietitian and nutritionist titles are reserved for licensees. A dietitian applicant shows current CDR registration as an RD or RDN.

Is Montana in the Dietitian Compact?
Montana has enacted the Dietitian Licensure Compact (2025), but no state issues compact privileges yet. Until they start, practicing here takes the state's own credential.
- Compact enacted, not issuing yet
Can a dietitian licensed elsewhere get a Montana credential by endorsement?
Montana's general out-of-state law lets the board license someone licensed in another state with substantially equivalent standards, without an exam. Most RDNs simply apply on their current CDR registration, which is the dietitian license requirement.
- Endorsement or registration-based route
- Current CDR registration required

Does Montana have a jurisprudence exam?
The dietitian license rests on CDR registration, which already requires the CDR registration exam. No state jurisprudence exam was confirmed.
Does Montana require fingerprints?
- Fingerprint background check
Telehealth dietitians and Montana
No telehealth registration exists. An out-of-state dietitian licensed or certified elsewhere may provide medical nutrition therapy by telehealth without a Montana license only in narrow cases: consulting with a Montana licensee, a current patient temporarily in Montana, or short-term follow-up care.
Does Montana credential non-RD nutritionists?
A separate licensed nutritionist route requires a master's or doctoral degree in nutrition, 1,000 hours of supervised practice, a passing score on the CNS exam or an approved equivalent, and current certification as a certified nutrition specialist.
- Nutritionist credential
