What dietitians miss in Nebraska
- Medical nutrition therapy in Nebraska must be provided in consultation with a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. In outpatient care, conferring with the referring practitioner satisfies the rule.
- A non-RD path exists: an RDN-equivalent graduate degree, 1,000 supervised hours and the CDR exam also qualify for the LDN, so current CDR registration is one route, not the only one.
- Nebraska was one of the first three states to enact the Dietitian Licensure Compact, in 2024. No state issues privileges yet.
Does Nebraska license dietitians?
Nebraska bars anyone without a license or a compact privilege from practicing medical nutrition therapy, and reserves the dietitian, nutritionist and LDN titles. General nutrition guidance that is not medical nutrition therapy stays open to everyone. Current CDR registration as an RDN qualifies an applicant for the LDN.
- License
- Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN); Licensed Nutritionist (LN)
- Practice is restricted to credential holders
Citation: Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-1801 to 38-1823 (Medical Nutrition Therapy Practice Act)
Is Nebraska in the Dietitian Compact?
Nebraska has enacted the Dietitian Licensure Compact (2024), but no state issues compact privileges yet. Until they start, practicing here takes the state's own credential.
- Compact enacted, not issuing yet
Can a dietitian licensed elsewhere get a Nebraska credential by endorsement?
The department, on the board's recommendation, may license someone licensed in another jurisdiction who meets Nebraska's requirements or substantially equivalent ones. Military spouses may apply for a temporary license.
- Endorsement or registration-based route
- CDR registration not required
Citation: Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-1814
Does Nebraska have a jurisprudence exam?
The LDN route uses current CDR registration or the CDR registration exam. No state jurisprudence exam was confirmed.
Telehealth dietitians and Nebraska
No telehealth registration was found. The Academy's telehealth table lists no telehealth-specific provision for Nebraska dietitians, so the license or a future compact privilege applies.
Does Nebraska offer a provisional permit for new graduates?
A temporary license lets someone who meets every requirement except the exam practice under a qualified supervisor for up to one year or until the exam, using a student or trainee title. It is void after a failed exam unless extended for good cause.
- Provisional permit available
Does Nebraska credential non-RD nutritionists?
The licensed nutritionist (LN) credential takes CNS certification or the CNS exam, a master's or doctoral degree, 30 semester hours of science and nutrition coursework, and 1,000 hours of supervised practice.
- Nutritionist credential
