What dietitians miss in New York
- New York certification protects titles only, so an RDN serving New York clients without using a certified title does not need it under Article 157. Employers and payers may still ask for it.
- Applicants need endorsements from three acceptable dietitians or nutritionists, a step few other states require.
- An associate degree route exists: ten full-time-equivalent years of education and experience within the past fifteen years.
Does New York license dietitians?
New York certifies titles; it does not license dietitians. Only a certified person may use the titles certified dietitian, certified dietician or certified nutritionist, but the article governs title use rather than practice. Certification takes education, supervised experience, an exam and three professional endorsements.

- Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist; Certified Dietitian; Certified Nutritionist
- Only the title is protected

Is New York in the Dietitian Compact?
New York is not a Dietitian Compact member.

Can a dietitian licensed elsewhere get a New York credential by endorsement?
No license by endorsement was found. Out-of-state RDNs apply on the standard requirements: a qualifying degree, 800 hours of planned experience, the RD or CNS exam, and endorsements from three acceptable dietitians or nutritionists.
- CDR registration not required
Citation: N.Y. Educ. Law 8004
Does New York have a jurisprudence exam?
The exam requirement is met by either the CDR registration exam or the Certified Nutrition Specialist exam. No state exam is listed.
- No state jurisprudence exam
Telehealth dietitians and New York
No telehealth registration exists. Because New York certifies only titles, the Academy lists no telehealth-specific action for dietitians, but notes that practitioners serving hospital patients by telehealth must be licensed.
Does New York credential non-RD nutritionists?
The same certification covers nutritionists. The Certified Nutrition Specialist exam satisfies the exam requirement as well as the CDR exam does, so CNS holders can become certified nutritionists. It is a title certification, not a practice license.
- Nutritionist credential
How often does a New York dietitian credential renew?
Certification is registered in triennial periods; the statute sets a registration fee for each three-year period. The initial certification fee is $294.
- Renews every 3 years
