Texas requires its jurisprudence exam before you apply, completed within 30 days of paying its fee, plus an HHSC-approved human trafficking course to renew. Pennsylvania requires 3 hours of child abuse training for licensure and 2 per renewal. Ohio requires one hour on ethics or dietetics law every two years.
The RD exam tests what a dietitian needs to know everywhere. It does not test what a particular state expects: its practice act, its reporting duties, its own priorities. A handful of states fill that gap with a requirement of their own. They are small compared with the RD, but they are the items most likely to be missing when an application arrives.
Which state requires a jurisprudence exam for dietitians?
Texas is the clear example. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) says you "must first successfully complete two examinations" to be eligible to apply: the CDR registration exam and the Texas Jurisprudence exam. The jurisprudence exam "is based on the state and federal laws, rules, and regulations relating to the practice of Licensed Dietitians," and you provide proof of a passing score with the application.
Three practical points from TDLR's pages:
- A 30-day window. "Your jurisprudence exam must be completed within 30 days after paying the jurisprudence exam registration fee. After 30 days, your fee and registration will expire." Do not register until you are ready to sit for it.
- A separate fee. You pay the jurisprudence exam fee in addition to the $108 application fee. TDLR's exam page does not state the amount.
- It counts as CE later. TDLR credits the jurisprudence exam as 1 hour of continuing education each renewal cycle.
Remember what the Texas license does: TDLR says a license is not required to practice dietetics in Texas, but is required to use the "licensed dietitian" title or "LD" initials. See Texas dietitian licensing.
We did not confirm a dietitian jurisprudence exam in the other states we reviewed for this site. Check each board's current application, because requirements change.
Which states require specific courses?
Texas: human trafficking prevention
To renew, a Texas dietitian must complete "a human trafficking prevention training course, approved by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC)," in addition to 12 hours of continuing education every two years.
Pennsylvania: child abuse recognition and reporting
Pennsylvania requires at least 3 hours of training in child abuse recognition and reporting to obtain an LDN license (49 Pa. Code 21.721(c)), and at least 2 of the 30 continuing education hours at each biennial renewal (21.724(a)). The training must be approved under the board's child abuse reporting rule. See Pennsylvania LDN licensing.
Ohio: ethics or dietetics law
Every Ohio licensee completes at least one hour on "ethics or laws, rules, and regulations governing the practice of dietetics" in each two-year renewal period, from activities approved by CDR, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or the Ohio Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (Ohio Admin. Code 4759-4-04). See Ohio dietitian licensing.
What other state-specific steps catch applicants?
- Georgia: notarized forms and CE Broker. Georgia's Secretary of State says licensure "requires signatures across all forms" and "some forms require notarizing." Since January 1, 2026, licensed dietitians must report CE in CE Broker. See Georgia dietitian licensing.
- New York: three endorsements. The certified dietitian/certified nutritionist application requires "the endorsement of three acceptable dietitians-nutritionists." New York certifies titles rather than licensing practice. See New York certification.
- Kentucky: fresh verifications and background results. Verifications from other states must be created within 60 days of applying and background results within 90 days (201 Ky. Admin. Regs. 33:015).
- Florida: board-approved fingerprinting. Fingerprints go through a vendor approved by the Department of Law Enforcement (Fla. Stat. 456.0135).
When in the process does each requirement fall?
Timing is where these items cause trouble:
- Before applying: Texas jurisprudence exam; Pennsylvania's 3-hour child abuse training; New York's endorsements.
- With the application: Georgia's notarized forms; Kentucky's fresh verifications and background results; Florida's fingerprints.
- At renewal: Texas's human trafficking course; Pennsylvania's 2 child abuse hours; Ohio's ethics or law hour; Georgia's CE Broker entries.
For the hours themselves, see CE requirements across states.
Will the compact add jurisprudence requirements?
Nothing about the compact applies yet. The Dietitian Licensure Compact is enacted but not issuing privileges, and its Commission is still adopting rules. If you are licensing in Texas or Pennsylvania, these requirements apply to you now regardless. See the compact hub.
Who takes the exam or the course?
You do, always. A jurisprudence exam, a required course and a notarized signature are personal to the licensee. What a licensing service can do is make sure you know about each one in time, point you to the right provider, and confirm the proof is in the file.
How can we help with state-specific requirements?
Our Jurisprudence & State Requirement Support service ($249 per state) identifies every state-specific item for the state you are entering, tells you when each is due, points you to approved providers and study material, and checks that proof of completion is ready for the application or renewal. You take every exam and course yourself, and you review, sign, pay and submit the application. It pairs with our License by Endorsement ($599 per state) and Full State License Application ($749 per state) services. Exam, course and board fees are separate.
Common questions
- Do dietitians have to take a jurisprudence exam?
- In Texas, yes. TDLR requires the Texas Jurisprudence exam, along with the CDR registration exam, before you apply for a license. We did not confirm a dietitian jurisprudence exam in the other states we reviewed, but check each board's current application.
- How long do I have to take the Texas dietitian jurisprudence exam?
- Thirty days from paying the registration fee. After that, TDLR says the fee and registration expire and you must register and pay again.
- What child abuse training does a Pennsylvania LDN need?
- At least 3 hours of approved child abuse recognition and reporting training to obtain the license, and at least 2 of the 30 continuing education hours at each biennial renewal.
- Can someone take the jurisprudence exam for me?
- No. Exams, required courses and notarized signatures are personal to the licensee. A licensing service can tell you what is required and when, and check that the proof is in your file.
